With the MAN 175D engine already being used in markets such as offshore, tug, ferry, fishing and navy, MAN Energy Solutions has now received its first order for an application involving a megayacht. The diesel-electric propulsion system is comprised of five gensets with 12V175D-MEL and 16V175D-MEL engines. Consequently, it is not only the first yacht-related application for the MAN 175D, but also constitutes a significant milestone for the 16-cylinder version of the engine.
The high-performance MAN 175D marine engine is compact and modular as well as robust and reliable. It is a highly efficient and eco-friendly engine. With its clear and appealing design, the MAN 175D sets new standards even among megayachts. It received the Red Dot Design Award in 2015 and was also the winner of the German Design Award in 2016.
In order to minimize noise emissions and achieve a low structure-borne sound impact on the ship's foundation, the gensets will be seated on double-elastic mountings. The requirement of IMO Tier III and soot-free exhaust gas emission can be achieved by means of the extremely compact MAN 175D SCR system in combination with a diesel particulate filter. For both 12V175D and 16V175D, identical SCR systems will be applied, each with two lines of urea mixer and reactor unit combinations. With an excellent power-to-weight ratio, airless operation and closed-loop NOx emission control, the MAN 175D SCR offers a highly competitive solution for IMO Tier III applications. Thanks to its IMO NOx Scheme A certification procedure, the system can be installed directly without further on-board confirmation tests.
